30 Rock has ended, and we are sad, but also glad that we got to watch six seasons of it.

Community is back, but with new showrunners, and we’re not sure how we feel about it yet.

Cynara at the Cinema: she gives her reviews of historical foreign drama A Foreign Affair and raunchy Melissa McCarthy comedy vehicle Identity Thief.

We discuss our anticipation of the upcoming Melissa McCarthy/Sandra Bullock buddy cop comedy! And our opinions on age differences in romantic relationships!

Episode #27: Failing Forward

Ken Jeong as Chang and Chevy Chase as Pierce in Community

Cynara saw Guy Maddin’s latest flick, Keyhole, and had to do some remedial Maddin 101 for her fellow theatre-goers. As of Saturday, Jenny had made plans to see The Cabin in the Woods, so some very spoiler-free speculation about that picture (which we have now both seen and which will be discussed at a later date) ensues. We talk in generalities about films we’ve seen lately and films we want to see soon, as well as the perils of aging and de-aging technology in film and SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome).

Flipping to the small screen, we talk about the ongoing and very public beef between Chevy Chase and Community showrunner Dan Harmon, which segues into lots of fan talk about recent Community episodes (feel free to vote in the comments as to who you think is Cynara’s “Blade”).

Then we do some Mad Men talk, so if you’re not up to date, don’t listen after the 40:00 mark.

Episode #19: Take It to the Net!

Jenny and Cynara's heads pasted onto a screen capture from Hockey Night in Canada's "Coach's Corner" with Ron McLean and Don Cherry.

And we’re back! Sound quality is not so great on this episode. We apologize.

1:30 – Community! Rough start, strong third episode.

12:30 – Blink and you missed it (and not a moment too soon): The Playboy Club. But we talk more about how muscled arms are “in” for women these days, or at least “in” as long as you’re femme.

15:20 – Rosie O’Donnell has a new show. Cynara realizes she basically blocked out everything Rosie has said and done since the end of her ’90s-era daytime talk show. Also, Cynara is not really impressed with how Oprah now goes on TV and analyzes people who were on her old show in the past, but this time they’re not there to defend themselves!

25:05 – Zooey Deschanel. Jenny actually likes her new sitcom.

31:00 – The Eli Gold Show, um, we mean, The Good Wife. Jenny is bored of Will/Alicia. Also, did you know there is at least one person on this planet who thinks Hugh Laurie’s American accent is crap? There is!

40:00 – Jenny and Cynara need D/s lessons for friendship. This branches into a discussion of Don Cherry and Ron McLean and how Ron defended bullying as a practice on George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight. And how neither Cynara nor Jenny is a hockey fan, yet we speak conversational hockey-talk. This is Canada, for you.

Episode #13 – A’s, B’s and C’s

We fatsplain some of Winnipeg’s bookselling history and how it includes the centre of the universe, New York City. Know your McNally Robinsons and your Aqua Books and your Hollys and your Kellys. Specifically your Kelly Hugheses. Cynara gets a taste of her own Winnipeg-booster medicine. Also, what’s the deal with Winnipeg’s bookstore/restaurant combos?

Cynara’s Movie Corner: Easy A. Did she like it? Three guesses and the first two don’t count. Spoiler alert: she didn’t hate it. And Emma Stone is worthy of her own comedy vehicle.

-The importance of female relationships in TV and movies. Buffy is high on this scale;  Star Trek: The Next Generation is low.

-We’re still waiting for “our” Superbad or The Hangover. (The good news is, there are some people who might be writing it!)

-Cynara catches Jenny up on the latest “juicy” development on Gossip Girl. (BTW, the actor in question is Penn Badgley.)

-Jenny’s TV Time, where she spends waaaay more time than is strictly necessary trying to convince you to watch Community. Ken Jeong is a medical doctor, did you know? Also, Community does right by Betty White.

-Brief comment on Modern Family, Weeds, Hawaii Five-O; less brief comment on The Big C (Starring Laura Linney and Gabourey Sidibe!)

-Vampire dramas are so 2008. Where are the manticore dramas? Or the centaur dramas? (Couple spoilers for the Buffy Season 8 comic books here). Manticore Mansion! Mermaid 90210!

-Jenny would be into Nikita and Undercovers if she weren’t completely tired of spy shows.

(Note: Cynara was right — Maggie Q is Hawaiian-born. Her Asian heritage is Vietnamese)

(Note to background-laughing Derek: You are the WORST.)

APOLOGETIC NOTE: Cynara regrets using classist/racist terminology for a portable stereo system in this episode. Evidently, she needs to work harder to excise the term–oft-spoken in her childhood–from her lexicon. Let’s all consider this a learning opportunity.
