Episode #16 – Ahead by a Century

Clockwise from top left: Ellen Page in Inception; Mila Kunis in The Book of Eli; Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit; Natalie Portman in Black Swan

HELLO EVERBODY! We’re back after an extended absence! Cynara was back in Winnipeg for the holidays, so scant days before she returns to land of plenty known as Vancouver, we recorded a podcast — and we did it when we were in the same room, my kitchen!

NOTE: This episode has what they call in the business a “cold open.” Also, the humming sound that appears intermittently is my refrigerator.

Thank you for your patience.

DISCUSSED:

-We love Ellen Page, blah blah, what else is new?

-Weird rambling about sci-fi, Minnie Driver, Vancouver-made TV, The Ghost Whisperer‘s inexplicable storylines

-Shout outs and baby stories

-Black Swan: Cynara gives her thoughts on this psychological thriller, PLUS: Tales of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet

-The Book of Eli: Jenny liked it, though the Tomatometer didn’t. PLUS: Why Mila Kunis should play an alien on Star Trek.

-Celebrity-written novels and poetry (Specifically: Macaulay Culkin and Jewel), and why rap and pop lyrics might not be poetry on their own (sans performative aspect), no matter how hard Jay Z tries to convince us.

-Winter’s Bone: Jenny’s favourite flick of the year.

-True Grit: Cynara’s got nothing but praise for Hailee Steinfeld, PLUS: Snakes!

Hi Ladies ,Happy New Year and welcome back. I recommend you do watch the mini series, ” The Deep”. Try to go to spacecast.com. And if you do, check out the Series from the UK.” Being Human”. I really like it . It is about a vampire, werewolf and a ghost who are roomates and struggling with wanting to be so called normal and human and all kinds of conflicts happen. Sounds like a bad joke, but it is really good. Space will be showing a new Canadian version of this show as well. Okay hands down, the best Arnold Swarzeneggar movie is “Last Action Hero”. It really made me laugh! Vivian

Hi to both of you! Not nearly as pop-culture literate as you but I have two comments on two movies Jenny generously watched with me:

Inception…I only remember Ellen Page’s face and scenes…you mean she wasn’t the main character!? I want to/need to watch that movie again…even wondered in my own dream that night if I was in a dream within a dream?

Winters Bone…later discussions here at the house about whether it was depressing. I actually found it redemptive and inspiring. Hard times come and to see the dogged determination and steely resolve of that young woman was riveting.
